We were living in San Antonio in 1996 and working on a military base. San Antonio was having another drought and water rationing was imposed. Lawn watering could only occur on even days from 8-10 in the morning. Well, on a military base the duty day begins at 7:30am so by 8 o’clock it’s not possible to run home to start moving the lawn sprinklers around. One day, William Dick walked into my office to tell me he and figured out a way to set up water sprinklers all around his yard that were already aimed and didn’t need to be moved around. He showed me a funny collection of pipe fittings constructed into an S-shape. He explained that he threaded his
garden hose on to the pipe and attached it to a pop-up sprinkler heads that he had buried in his lawn. I instantly understood what he was doing and exclaimed, “Bill, that’s brilliant! What a great idea! Show me how you made this.” After work he showed me around to the stores where he got the parts to fit it all together. We now had a way to set up our sprinklers so they didn’t have to be moved around. Our wives didn’t like moving the lawn sprinklers around so now all they had to do was go outside to turn them on and off. All the lawn watering would be taken care of automatically.
